Heading West out of downtown Lexington on US 60/Versailles Road, it doesn't take long to pass Man of War Boulevard where you will see the Blue Grass Airport on the left and Keeneland Race Course on the right. Proceeding on toward Versailles and Midway, at one point you pass a strange looking castle that has been there for many years and now appears to be in a state of rebuilding. I don't know what possessed the man who built it but have heard many stories.
The Versailles area is a great place to buy land or a farm and you can see the ample open space as you pass through the countryside. Driving into town, you first note the Woodford County Court House which anchors the main intersection. Having grown up in California, I am used to large counties but here in Kentucky it seems every small town has it's own county. The Court House was originally built of logs in 1790, rebuilt of stone in 1794, and rebuilt once again of brick in 1812. The structure burned in 1965 and the present Courthouse was completed in 1970.
Versailles is a small, quiet community with nice homes and a reasonable commute to Lexington. Those who live here stress the small town atmosphere, family values, friendly people, a low crime rate, and affordable properties. Versailles is the County seat of Woodford County, is the home of a number of lovely thoroughbred horse farms, and is proud of it's historical heritage as well as the bourbon that is produced here.
